A Houston destination wedding planner for couples getting married somewhere other than home — abroad, out of state, or a few hours down the coast.
Events by Momo has been planning events out of Houston since 2009. A destination wedding runs on the same fundamentals as one held at home: vendors, timeline, budget, guest logistics. The difference is that you cannot drive over on a Tuesday to check whether the chairs actually arrived.
That distance is the entire job. Everything below is about closing it.

Couples usually underestimate the same five things:

The first night sets the tone and does the practical work — guests who just flew in meet each other before the ceremony. Usually the most relaxed event of the weekend and the easiest to under-plan.
Hotel contracts, arrival windows spread across two or three days, and airport transfers that have to work without anyone texting the couple. This starts months before the first flight.
A day built around where you are — the reason for choosing the destination in the first place. Transport, capacity limits, and a backup for weather.
The only chance to see the space with your vendor team in it. Timing, placement, and the problems that only surface when you're standing there.
Officiant coordination, local permitting where the venue doesn't cover it, and a timeline that accounts for a setup crew you are meeting in person for the first time.
The largest event of the weekend, then a send-off the next morning while half the guests are checking out. Two events with very different staffing needs.
Vendors you hire sight unseen
You are signing contracts with people you have not met, in a market where the review sites you trust have no coverage. References, payment terms, and written scope carry more weight than a portfolio.
A guest list that behaves differently
Flights and hotel nights change who actually comes. Acceptance rates run lower than a local wedding and firm up later, so seating, catering counts, and transport are built to absorb movement rather than locked early.
Legal requirements set by a country, not a county
Residency periods, document translation, proof of eligibility, waiting periods. These are confirmed with the authority for your specific destination before any deposit goes out, not after.
Everything that has to cross a border
Attire, signage, florals, favors, and anything custom needs a shipping plan, a customs plan, and a backup sourced locally. Carry-on is not a plan.
Decisions made on a delay
A venue eight hours ahead answers tomorrow. Questions get batched, approvals get calendared, and the vendor communication runs through one point of contact instead of a group chat.
A contingency that is written down
Weather, flight disruption, a vendor that does not show. Every outdoor element has an indoor version and every critical vendor has a named alternate, agreed before the week of.

The same three levels of support as our other weddings, scaled to a weekend where nobody is close to home.
Full Planning starts before the venue. Destination shortlisting, site research, vendor sourcing and contracting across the local market, budget management, design direction, guest logistics, and on-site management from the welcome event through the send-off. One point of contact for the entire weekend, in one time zone or two.
Partial Planning picks up where you are — usually after the venue and date are locked — and carries vendor selection, the production timeline, and coordination through to the day.
Day-Of Coordination covers execution only. For couples who have planned the weekend themselves and need someone running the timeline and the vendors so both families can be guests.

In Houston we work from an established vendor list. At a destination, that list does not transfer, so the sourcing is the work: caterers, decor, floral, photography, sound, and transport, found and vetted in a market where the names mean nothing to you yet.
Vetting is done on references, contract terms, and direct conversation rather than a portfolio — a portfolio travels, reliability does not. Contracts are reviewed before signature, deposits are scheduled against deliverables, and every critical vendor has a named alternate agreed in advance.
Resort and venue in-house teams are common at destinations and often good. They also work for the venue, not for you. Where a venue requires its own vendors, we work within that list and manage it to your timeline; where it does not, we source independently and hold the comparison side by side.
Travel is scoped per event and confirmed in writing before planning begins — site visits, production days, and who is on the ground for the weekend itself. It is priced separately from the planning fee so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
Local, in nearly every case. Local teams know the venue, the market rates, the permitting, and the weather. The work is sourcing them, vetting them on references and contract terms, negotiating, and managing them to your timeline. Where a venue requires its in-house vendors, we work within that list.

Requirements differ by country and change, so the paperwork is verified directly with the authority for your destination rather than taken from a checklist. The U.S. State Department maintains general guidance on marriage abroad, including the common approach of completing the legal marriage in the United States and holding the ceremony overseas.

Earlier than a wedding at home. Destination venues book further out, international vendor contracts take longer to negotiate, and some countries have residency or waiting periods that set a floor on the timeline regardless of what else is ready. If you have a destination and a rough date, that is enough to start. If you have neither, that is also enough — the first conversation is usually about narrowing the field.
